T.S.Eliot critic-3

T.S.Eliot critic-3 Distinction between the three voices of Poetry:- Eliot was more concerned with the distinction between 2 nd and 3 rd voices. In his play “The Rock” he was limited in his freedom as far as poetic manners were concerned. In the passages he wrote, it was the 2 nd voice addressing an audience . It was not a dramatic voice ,i.e. the lines for the chorus in The Rock were not dramatic. The personages were not individualized. The personages were speaking for Eliot not representing any supposed character of their own. Later he changed the pattern in his ‘Murder in the Cathedral’. Here the Chorus is not unknown or anonymous. Here chorus is of ‘Char-women’ of   Canterbury. Chorus is not identified with the writer but writer   identifies himself with chorus. Though the chorus was not important in the play, the whole play revolves around one character. In 1949 he wrote ‘The Cocktail Party’ in which he created several characters with each of whom he identi...

T. S . Eliot- The Critic-2

T. S . Eliot- The Critic-2 Thomas Stearns Eliot was undeniably the most influential critic of his generation. A number of   his striking phrases –“Objective Correlation , dissociation of sensibility” have passed into the general   currency of criticism. Eliot is the standard starting point of for most modern discussions of Elizabethan and Jacobean literature . Most important of all, he the last major figure in the line of poet-critics for whom poetry and criticism offer complementary paths to understand what matters in culture. In his book published in 1957 he categorized poetry based on the three voices _   Three Voices of Poetry. Here he discussed dramatic poetry as well as lyrical and epic poetry. T.S Eliot As a Critic

T.S Eliot As a Critic It is not an easy task to under stand Eliot as a critic, because he is the person who raise voice against “the romantic” criticism. He denies Wordsworth’s explanation in which Wordsworth claims that    “poetry is nothing but recollection of emotions in tranquility”. While ,Eliot says that poetry is not a medium to give went to the emotions of a poet, but “poetry is an escape from emotions”. It is not a turning loose of emotions. Very confusing for students like me to under stand the way he is trying to explain. It requires deep understanding of the critic i.e. T.S.Eliot. He was an objective critic which means he is talking about escape of emotions is particularly about poet’s personal emotions. He favors self-sacrifice of poet or impersonality or depersonalization of the emotions of the poet .This will give universal appeal to essence of the poem. Here I would like to add that Eliot was under the influence of Sigmund Freud. It was that influenc...
