The horse that wanted more beauty A cosmic god had a horse. The horse was beautiful and also it had many good qualities. But it wanted to be more perfect in every way. It especially wanted to become beauty unparalleled. One day the horse said to the cosmic god, “0 Lord, you have given me beauty. You have given me other good qualities. I am so grateful to you. But how I wish you could make me more beautiful. I would be extremely, extremely grateful if you could make me more beautiful.” The cosmic god said, “I am more than ready to make you more beautiful. Tell me in what way you want to be changed.” The horse said, “It seems to me that I am not well proportioned. My neck is too short. If you can make my neck a little longer, my upper body will be infinitely more beautiful. And if you can make my legs much longer and thinner, then I will look infinitely more beautiful in my lower body.” The cosmic god said, “OK!” Then immediately he made a camel appear in place of t...

The Theory of Objective Correlative

The Theory of Objective Correlative This phrase was first of all used by Eliot in his essay on on ‘Hamlet’ in 1919. Since then it has gained   a popularity which could not have been foreseen by Eliot himself. Indeed he calls it a “notorious “term. In his essay Eliot declared ‘Hamlet ‘ as an artistic failure .   In support of his declaration he gave reason that ‘Shakespeare had failed to find the proper objective correlation for Hamlet’s feelings. Objective correlative was a part of Eliot’s impersonal theory of poetry . It is process of fusion of poet’s emotions with the emotions of the character and makes them inseparable part of the poetic work. The theory of impersonal poetry will not allow the poet to communicate his ideas and expressions straight away into his poems. Thus, objective correlative, required for the purpose. The Dramatic Monologue

The Dramatic Monologue:- Non dramatic poetry with a dramatic Element : In dramatic monologue , author identifies himself with one main character or vise-versa. Here the character became just mouth piece of the author In his dramatic monologue it is Browning himself speaking through the mouth of his character. Browning’s Caliban is different to the Caliban of Shakespeare in the Tempest. Here in dramatic monologue there is no scope for action so, character just became auther’s follower. It is 2 nd voice used in dramatic monologue.2nd voice means the voice of poet talking to other people. In all non-dramatic poetry   second voice is used . 3 rd voice can also be heard at times in Epics. The Epic is essentially a tale told to an audience , while drama is essentially an action exhibited to an audience . The 1 st   Voice:- A lyric is the name of the short poem directly expressing the thoughts and sentiments of the poet . So, 1 st voice is the voice of poet talking t...

T.S.Eliot critic-3

T.S.Eliot critic-3 Distinction between the three voices of Poetry:- Eliot was more concerned with the distinction between 2 nd and 3 rd voices. In his play “The Rock” he was limited in his freedom as far as poetic manners were concerned. In the passages he wrote, it was the 2 nd voice addressing an audience . It was not a dramatic voice ,i.e. the lines for the chorus in The Rock were not dramatic. The personages were not individualized. The personages were speaking for Eliot not representing any supposed character of their own. Later he changed the pattern in his ‘Murder in the Cathedral’. Here the Chorus is not unknown or anonymous. Here chorus is of ‘Char-women’ of   Canterbury. Chorus is not identified with the writer but writer   identifies himself with chorus. Though the chorus was not important in the play, the whole play revolves around one character. In 1949 he wrote ‘The Cocktail Party’ in which he created several characters with each of whom he identi...
